As with any profession, a DJ isn’t hard to find.  For every great DJ, there’s a thousand that are nowhere near their level.  A DJ is more often than not just a phone call away.  All you have to do is open a copy of the yellow pages or perform a simple web search to find several listings.  There are DJs for every taste and preference for an affordable price.  Some DJs allow you to pick the playlist and how their performance transpires while others are very particular about how and what they perform.  Popular DJs are usually the ones who have these kind of demands and they cost considerably more than any other DJ, if they’re even available to perform on a job-by-job basis.
The best DJs have a standing gig at a venue and are able to perform there and only there for an extended period of time.  DJs that aren’t in this position claw for the table scraps that are left over.  In a crowded DJ landscape, it’s hard to stand out because so many people are ready and willing to perform at a moment’s notice.  You have to be truly excellent to be considered remarkable enough to get a job performing one time.  It’s even harder to wow the crowd enough to the point where they want you to perform again.  If you’re not having the best luck performing, keep trying and eventually you will find where you belong in the DJ world.  When you reach the status of experienced veterans, you will get more opportunities than DJs who are less experienced.
