Lighting Effects

So, you're getting into the DJ market.  You've got mad turntable skills, you're great with your mixer, and you've already got a YouTube video with five thousand views that has your mother beaming with pride.  So, you're ready to start getting gigs and hosting parties, right?  Wrong.  You need to master a few more skills yet, young apprentice.  Lighting effects is one of the many things you'll want to become accustomed to.  Here are the basic lighting effects that you'll want to learn, and try integrating with your style.

The disco ball – also called a mirror ball – as that classic 70s era feel (despite the fact that they were around from the 20s and on), and it's a popular item today.  It's easy to get those dancing lights moving around.  These are simple and cost effective items.  Just be sure to get a rotating ball for your lighting effects, and you're good to go.

Strobe lights are another major item you'll want to look into.  If you get more than one, get a linked system so you don't spoil your own effects by lights that are out of synchronization.  This great effect should be used in moderation.  Goof around with the speed settings as well to get the feel you're looking for.

Colored lighting is a basic must, with the LED color-changing lights allowing you to program a bunch of different colors into a fixture so you don't have to invest too much in different sets of lights, or too much of your time swapping out gels or lights.

Laser lights are a great way to go, too, and as long as we're on the topic we strongly recommend picking up a 1300 or higher watt fog machine in order to amplify the effect of your laser lights as well as your other lighting effects.  You'll want to get remote controls whenever possible for your lighting effects, too, to allow you maximum control at maximum range for your different effects.
