Wedding djs

Becoming a DJ can be tough, and one way that you may want to go about it is to specialize in a specific sort of DJing.  One example is to become a wedding DJ.  This is a popular option, especially in areas that are prone to have a lot of weddings (and yes, that does vary by area – say hello to Las Vegas, for example).  But how can you break into the market as a wedding DJ?  What do you need to get started?  How can you market yourself?

In addition to all the normal gear you'll need as a DJ (the computer software, digital hardware, turntables, double decks, mixers, and so on) you'll need a couple of additional things.  One thing you need to alter a bit is your selection of music.  As a wedding DJ, you're going to be expected to have more slow, jazzy songs than an average DJ.

Remember that you're working with a very diverse crowd.  Have a wide selection of music to fit a crowd that's likely to span multiple generations.  To be really competitive as a DJ, you'll need to have a good lighting system, since most wedding DJs get thousands of dollars per gig.  People simply expect the full lights and sounds show.

The other major thing you're going to need is personality.  Having a big, friendly personality, so you can intro people as they come in, announce upcoming songs, and basically befriend two extended families, is a challenge – but it's one of the most important things when being a wedding DJ.  Places to advertise yourself will include classifieds, online websites, and bulletin boards at churches, schools, and more, but always remember that the best way is word of mouth, so get yourself out there and let the good word of your presence among wedding DJs spread like wild fire!
